Even if you weren’t endowed with a large piece of property to plant a garden, you can still make do with that land you do have available. Small garden landscaping is an art form all its own. And with a little advice you can get started creating a stunning garden of your own.

One of the mistakes most people make is using so many different colors that it ends up being overbearing. And it doesn’t take much to over do it either. What you want to do is use two or three colors. Three colors would be the maximum you could get away with. To give your garden the appearance of being larger, use what is known as color graduation. This is when you will take a bolder color and then fade it as you go from one end to the other. The bold portion will appear to be larger.

You will want to have a mixture of straight lines and curves for a natural look. One thing often recommended is to divide your garden into smaller sections to provide depth. There is no set number of sections and it will be up to you to determine if you have gone too far.

Don’t get caught up in using only small plants and flowers. This can really look unnatural, and if it is not what you really do prefer, then you will dislike the look. Instead, try to keep your plants and flowers proportionate in size to your garden’s surroundings.

On the other hand, do not use plants and trees that are so large they take up too much of your garden space. This will really cause it to be overbearing and take away valuable space and also block out sunlight that the other plants need.

Another little trick is to utilize a mirror in your garden to give the appearance of a much larger space. It works well in homes and could give your small garden landscape a unique look.
