Tottenham Hotspur have sent their best wishes to a supporter who was taken ill during a “medical emergency” while they played Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

The action was halted in the 87th minute of the semi-final second leg and there was a lengthy stoppage while medics rushed to an individual in the stands.

“Play has been paused due to a medical emergency in the crowd,” Tottenham tweeted.

Some minutes later, referee Andre Marriner beckoned for the the match to continue and the fourth official signalled for eight minutes of additional time to be played.

Spurs wrote: “Play has resumed. Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter who was taken ill.”

The visitors echoed these sentiments, tweeting: “Everyone at Chelsea wishes the home supporter well.”

The incident occurred in the closing stages of the match as Chelsea were coasting towards February’s final at Wembley with a commanding 3-0 aggregate lead.

Antonio Rudiger put the Blues in front with a header in the 18th minute to increase their 2-0 advantage from last week’s first leg.

Spurs saw two penalties overruled by VAR and a goal ruled out for offside, but they were second best to their London rivals by some distance.
